Over the Fence (from June 1950)

We were talking about traveling with Harrold Johnson the other evening, and he remarked that his family had found a way to live almost as cheap traveling as they did at home.

"You can't travel with little folks and live in hotels, anyway." Harrold commented. "It's too much work. The only way to do it is to travel leisurely, stop often to let the children stretch their legs, make a picnic out of the meals and stay in cabins or motels at night.

"It was hard to get used to going slowly and stopping often at first, but
once you get used to it, it's more fun and you see a lot more.

"We have a gasoline stove - fireplaces are rarely any good for cooking - and we cook all our meals. I don't mean sandwiches, either. I mean hamburgers and wieners and cubed steaks once in a while and French or home fries, soups, cooked breakfast foods and the kind of things youngsters like, with a lot of fresh fruit and milk. Mommie doesn't mind the cooking, and the children eat better than they do at home. It's a continual picnic.

"We've traveled all over Ohio that way - on week-ends - and the girls love
it. We went East last year, and are going again this year, in a couple of weeks. The children want to see Hershey, Pa., for one place, and maybe we will go to Washington. It depends on what we want to see on the way. We stop on the slightest pretext and take side-trips whenever anything interesting offers. It's fun, believe it or not."

Since the Johnson girls are approximately 4, 6, 8, and 10 years old, it would be hard to believe if we didn't know Mrs. Johnson. She's a grand mother.
