This site is about going places, and about being back home again, and about some of the things that have caught our eye, or at least our fancy, along the way.

CD and Me and Going Gluten Free

Thought this might be the best place to share my experience with Celiac Disease so far and a good topic for my first blogging experience.

**** Warning, this may be too graphic for some. I tried to make sure it didn't get too detailed!! And it may get a little deep - sorry Hallie.****

So I've been gluten free for almost 5 months. I know that gluten sypmtoms/consequences can take different amounts of time for different people to disappear. But here's my observations so far.

My last known piece of gluten was a very yummy coffee cake I used to make for special occasions. I should have made it more, it's so good! I haven't tried it gluten free (gf) but I hope to some day!

A New Sith, or Revenge of the Hope

"Reconsidering Star Wars IV in the light of I-III"

Oh, man. This is good.

If we accept all the Star Wars films as the same canon, then a lot that happens in the original films has to be reinterpreted in the light of the prequels. As we now know, the rebel Alliance was founded by Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Bail Organa. What can readily be deduced is that their first recruit, who soon became their top field agent, was R2-D2.

I had it, like, I'm sure so many of us did at the end of RotS. Threepio was wiped, but R2! R2 knew. No wonder why he was such a smug little knowitall. So I thought about it, but Keith Martin has worked it all out. And not only R2's involvement with the rebellion all these years, but Chewbacca's as well. This one's a definite must-read for even the most half-hearted Star Wars fan.

YouTube Stop Motion Animation: Tony vs. Paul

This has got to be the coolest stop motion animation piece I've seen since Mike Jittlov's short, The Wizard of Speed and Time (not to be confused with the feature-length film by the same creator and name.) 'Nuff said...

YouTube Is Free, You Idiot!

Claire: Just give me the tape, Lyle.
Lyle: No way. I'm gonna post this on YouTube and make millions!
Zach: YouTube is free, you idiot!

Can You Place All 50 States On A Map With No Border Lines?

Can You Place All 50 States On A Map With No Border Lines?

My first score wasn't so great, but second time out I got 49/50, average error of 4 miles in 156 seconds. How well you do on this depends both on how well you know your states and how many of the early ones touch a border so you can get the placement right. My first round started with South Dakota and Arkansas. I also screwed up on Connecticut without any other states around it. None of mine were far off the mark, I was still within 100 miles even on those bad ones in the first round.

Are You Tone Deaf?

Saw this one the other day, but had to wait until the hubbub died down and I could actually get into the site, and also until I really had some time to try this out. Test your musical skills in six minutes, and find out whether or not you are tone deaf.

Developed as a quick test for tone deafness at Beth Israel/Harvard Medical School in Boston, it also tests musical memory. The author notes that "The test is purposefully made very hard, so excellent musicians rarely score above 80% correct." I'll agree, it's really hard, and I didn't expect to do very well, but I managed to score 91.7%!
