This site is about going places, and about being back home again, and about some of the things that have caught our eye, or at least our fancy, along the way.

Wanna go shopping?

While rearranging basement storage spaces for Christmas decorations, I decided to finally pull out a stack of magazines that have been on a back corner shelf for many years. I knew that I had saved September issues of Seventeen Magazine ever since Sheri was born. Well that is up until 2000. Short story here: I took all of them to the high school for a memory display during the 2000 OHS Alumni Reunion. Before I got back to reclaim them, someone had thrown them all away! I've been very sad about that ever since. Bygones be bygones.

A Thanksgiving Feast - with turkey to last for a year!

Luanne and Jenni seemed somewhat taken aback when I said in Chat on Sunday night that Allen and I would be cooking two turkeys for Thanksgiving. This is at least the third year that we've done so. Here's why. Turkeys have sold for 59 cents a pound for the last three years. We put the first one in the electric roaster about 11:00 on Wednesday night at 300 degrees. Allen got up about 5:00 Thursday morning; a thermometer showed that the meat needed to cook a little while longer and get about 10 degrees hotter.

Experienced Some Nostalgia Today

Got the Nov 9 edition of OrrViews today. On page 18 there's an announcement about the Thanksgiving praise service and auction on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, at the Kidron Salem Mennonite Church. Immediately, I was back in that old, cold schoolhouse across the road from the church, watching all the people bidding on the items that had been donated.

A Blast from the Past

Got a copy of The Vermont County Store catalogue today, and just had to sit down and look through it. Lordy, how I love that catalogue. Where on earth else would you find Cloverine Salve, Blue Waltz perfume, and maple sugar Santa Clauses?

Feeling Virtuous - Ready for Painting

I can't believe I actually got it all done! I'm ready for the two bedrooms and two bathrooms to be painted tomorrow! Boy, do I feel virtuous.

This is an extension of my "home improvement" efforts this year. The bathrooms still had the wallpaper that was on them when I moved in 8-1/2 years ago (!) (and how I hated that gray guest bathroom) and I really don't think I had the bedrooms done then, either - both had been painted by the former owner after the renters moved out.

Another Thought re Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

I just couldn't leave this alone, now, could I? I remembered more about the tune. It's from the "Surprise Symphony" by Haydn (Symphony No. 94). I've checked this out in Wikipedia (assuming the entry is valid) and Amazon.com, listening to the "surprise" excerpt on one of the CDs listed there.

So now you really DO know. Again, have a lovely day!

The ABCs Song; Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; etc.

I don't know why this popped into my head this morning (I'm not "hearing" music anymore, much, but that's a different story), but I'm determined to use my blog to record random thoughts such as this.

Some time ago in Chat, the tune for the songs above was discussed. I thought of a good way to remember the composer, and I'll bet this will tickle some memories for my sisters.

On-Line Scrabble Games

Sometimes I can't believe how much these Scrabble games mean to me. They truly are a haven from the every-day business of doing all the things that need to be done in life. - Another stroke of luck of living in this day and age. And I've begun to realize more than ever why Mom and her sisters looked forward so to receiving the Round Robin letters. I imagine they felt the same about those being a haven during the time they sat down and luxuriated in all the news of family. Wow.
