Music

Another Thought re Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

I just couldn't leave this alone, now, could I? I remembered more about the tune. It's from the "Surprise Symphony" by Haydn (Symphony No. 94). I've checked this out in Wikipedia (assuming the entry is valid) and Amazon.com, listening to the "surprise" excerpt on one of the CDs listed there.

So now you really DO know. Again, have a lovely day!

The ABCs Song; Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; etc.

I don't know why this popped into my head this morning (I'm not "hearing" music anymore, much, but that's a different story), but I'm determined to use my blog to record random thoughts such as this.

Some time ago in Chat, the tune for the songs above was discussed. I thought of a good way to remember the composer, and I'll bet this will tickle some memories for my sisters.

That Jazz I Like...

Secret Agent RadioThis entry has been brewing since last fall, when Luanne emailed her report of Vicki and Allen's visit during their train trip, and Luanne had mentioned the band that was playing "the jazz that Vicki and I both love."

I think it's safe to say that I've been primarily a classic rock kinda guy since moving here to the Motor City back in 8th grade. But I have always liked good music of just about any genre, and having played some jazz in my high school days, have a fondness for certain types of jazz as well.

Of course, most of the music I listen to nowadays would be properly labeled . Granted, my tendencies there still lie more towards rock sounds like Third Day and Petra (with former Head East singer John Schlitt), while Marissa would prefer the edgier sounds of Stellar Kart or eleventyseven.

Unfortunately for me, I have just enough adult-onset ADD (or more likely that I'm easily distracted when trying to listen to talk or music with lyrics when I'm trying to work. This is especially true when I'm typing, and even more so when I'm programming.

Are You Tone Deaf?

Saw this one the other day, but had to wait until the hubbub died down and I could actually get into the site, and also until I really had some time to try this out. Test your musical skills in six minutes, and find out whether or not you are tone deaf.

Developed as a quick test for tone deafness at Beth Israel/Harvard Medical School in Boston, it also tests musical memory. The author notes that "The test is purposefully made very hard, so excellent musicians rarely score above 80% correct." I'll agree, it's really hard, and I didn't expect to do very well, but I managed to score 91.7%!

I Love America

Yeah, a lot of entries today, but I gotta post one more. Last night a verse from the Alice Cooper song, I Love America, popped into my head. I wonder why...

I love the Tigers, but I hate the Mets
I ride my Hog, but I race my Vette
I gotta job, but I'm still in debt
I love America

Go Tigers!

Family Friday

Concert Photo
Waiting for the concert to start.

On July 4th, we went to Frankenmuth to watch some church friends, including our senior pastor and his wife, run in the Volksläufe. (There were two runners in the 10k and four in the 20k.) Anna took an interest in running, and has since been training to run in the 5k at the Crim in Flint later this month. Marissa also decided that she was interested, and both of our girls will participate in the quarter-mile "Teddy Bear Trot" at the event.

When Anna first said she wanted to run, I said I'd run with her. I have to admit, I didn't think she was serious, and I haven't been training. We started off our final Family Friday with a trip to the track at Holly High School, where the girls have been running, only this time I was running with Anna. Anna still can't run the full mile, (she walks part of the way) so I had hopes of keeping pace with her.
