Site Upgrade to Drupal 5.1 Complete

I have completed the upgrade to Drupal 5.1. You may notice that some screens look a little different when you post new entries or enter comments. I tried to keep the site looking as close to the previous theme, but there may be some subtle changes, and even some glitches. Just let me know if you encounter a problem.

Setting Gallery Permissions

When I first set up the gallery, I made most of the galleries non-public. You have to be logged in to view them. I also granted all family members rights to update permissions.

My reasoning behind this is that with all the talk about privacy and about protecting kids online, I decided it should be each parent's decision whether or not their kids' pictures were available online and publicly. I had to make that own decision myself, and initially the sub-galleries that feature Marissa and Anna individually were hidden, and only the family shots were available. I decided to change that when I gave their maternal grandparents the address of the site, so they wouldn't have to log in.

So at this point, that decision is up to you guys. If you want to make your gallery public so you can share it with your friends and non-Johnson relatives without making them get a login, it's very easy.

Vote for Drupal

Drupal is the (free) software that runs this site, and here's a quick and easy way to support Drupal by voting.

Support Drupal

From drupal.org:

Pakt publishing is running a competition for the best Open Source CMS, and Drupal is in the top 5 candidates. The final round of judging will be done by four judges, where the community vote is the fourth judge. That means it is time to head on over to the voting page and fill out the form to show that you choose Drupal above all others. The winning CMS will get US $5,000, the second will get US $3,000 and the third placed finalist will get US $2,000.

About the movie reviews

There are a couple of quirks in the Movie Review module that need to be fixed. One is that it doesn't display the "read more" link. You'll have to click the titles above the teaser for the full review until this gets fixed.

Let me know if you run across any additional bugs.

Site Updates

I've made a couple of major changes to the site. The other day, I installed the newest version of Gallery, which has some nice new features, including indicators for What's New, etc.

This evening, I upgraded the main site to the new and latest version of Drupal. I also went with a new theme this time around, and though this theme is missing a few features, I think that overall it looks a little sharper. I may tinker with it a little more if I can find some time.

I think everything is still working, but if not, let me know and I'll take a look at it.

Creating Links in Your Blog Entries

This bulletin is less necessary now that I've installed the urlfilter module, but I'll just cover that as another way to add hyperlinks.
